Hot or Smart? You Get to Choose

A friend and I started talking about whether we wanted our kids to be smart or good looking. I turned the question inward. What would I want for myself?

Thought Experiment

You're going to be reincarnated tomorrow. You will be reborn a human, and you get to choose your intelligence and attractiveness. Your sex and parents will be randomly assigned.

Your intelligence and attractiveness must be inversely proportional. So in order to be the smartest human on Earth, you'll have to also be the ugliest. Or you can be average attractiveness and average intelligence.

Using percentiles, you get to pick your future rankings. Choose a percentile between 1-99 for both attractiveness and intelligence. The sum of your two numbers must not exceed 100.

Click here for more on IQ testing.

Click here for more details and images of attractiveness ratings and statistics.

Normal Distributions

It looks like intelligence and attractiveness should both follow normal distributions. So when making a choice, it is safe to assume the 68, 95, 99.7 rule, click here for more details.

Things to Consider

Men and women are treated differently based on their looks and intelligence. You should be prepared for living your choice as a male and female.

Regardless of your attractiveness, some people will find you more attractive.

Where are you now? What percentile are you in intelligence and looks.? What is that total number. I'm guessing most people are going to think they're above 100, but statistically speaking most people wouldn't be. I'm realizing, for the first time in my life, I'm probably below average attractiveness. I always thought I was average to above average, but probably not. People grow up with their families who look like them and share the same features. People all probably over estimate their family features and traits. In that case, people might find themselves more attractive than they actually are. Because they have a bias for their parents, siblings, and families physical traits.

I looked up the distributions of my ASVAB score from the military, and I my score was over two standard deviations from the 50th percentile when I took it. That's not directly related to an IQ score, but it's probably safe to say I'm close to a standard deviation about the average IQ score of 100. According to assortative mating, I might be above average looking like I thought! Although my dating history doesn't confirm that conclusion.

Either way, my reincarnated self will most likely have to take a hit on intelligence to keep my looks, or sacrifice my looks to keep my brains. Or I'm just way too overconfident in my looks and smarts. What about you?

Final Answer

I'm going to think about this more. But for now, I have to stick with a 50/50 split.

Chess, Biology, Culture, and the Gender Rank Gap

A friend made a comment about how chess was a sport that didn't need a women's and men's category because it's intellectual and not physical. We argued about this for a while, and here is my response.

As of today, it’s factual to state that males are better chess players than females on average and at the elite levels. The question is why? Chess has a history of sexism. Research suggests that stereotypes in gender negatively impact female players. How much of the gender gap in chess is cultural vs biological? T: The Story of Testosterone, the Hormone that Dominates and Divides Us by Carole Hooven gives a lot of evidence for physical and personality differences between biological sexes. If all cultural factors were erased, differences between men and women would exist. It is unclear whether those differences would affect chess performance between men and women (see thought experiment below).

Physically, females experience fatigue earlier than males due to glycogen stores in the body. “During physical stress and during chess playing, mental fatigue occurs earlier in women.” With that said, “There exists no gender specific intellectual performance in humans for chess playing.” At the highest level where chess matches take several hours, elite women may fatigue earlier than elite men. This biological difference in sex could account for gaps between male and female grandmasters.

How does biological sex affect people’s motivation and preferences to play chess? Humans, and their common ancestors, were naturally selected and sexually selected. Environments determined which physical and psychological traits were most successful in creating successful offspring. Females also choose mates and males competed for females. Females selected males with traits they wanted for their offspring. Males more likely to be aggressive and muscular is common in mammals. Regardless of culture, biology affects motivation and personality.

For good and bad reasons, society assumes males are more ambitions than females. Susan Mattern's book on the science and history of menopause called The Slow Moon Climbs gives a great general explanation of how sexual selection can determine competitiveness: (She references Robert L. Trivers' 1972 classic discussion of sexual selection; and The Myth of Monogamy by Barash and Lipton 2001.)

"In species that compete for mating opportunities, males’ potential reproductive rate is much higher than that of females. Because they are constrained by the rate of female reproduction—a population can only produce as many children as the females can bear— some males may have many more offspring than others. Among these species, males gain more fitness by competing for mates than by providing for offspring. There is also more sexual dimorphism, because males evolve traits, such as large body size, that help them in this competition, a process that tends to escalate like an arms race."
Judit Polgár is the greatest woman to play chess. Her parents raised and educated her and her sisters through specializing in chess. Polgár’s father believed geniuses were made, not born. He is wrong. Geniuses are born and then made; they need both genes and environment. With that said, most people are born with the potential to acquire expertise in any field, including the ability to be good chess players.

Thought Experiment

What would happen if 5000 random healthy female babies and 5000 random healthy male babies were raised in a nurturing compound focused on creating chess grandmasters?

Imagine a compound being run like a dream boarding school. Chess would be the means to learn reading, math, and all the basic skills. All teachers would be qualified instructors. The school would have zero sexism. Students would go to school which would include chess practice. Students would have plenty of free time. They would live great lives. Chess would be how they are graded in school. And chess would be the highest honor given. Teachers would motivate, but not force students to play or practice chess outside of classes. What would happened with the students chess abilities?

Would the gender gap disappear?

Would the females care more about friendships and other social activities? Would the most obsessive, competitive, and determined students be overwhelmingly male?

I suspect yes and yes.

Depending on the duration of the experiment, there would be different results. Assuming there were three experiment durations: 12 year, 18 year, and 30 year. And assuming all players start with equal ratings, using the ELO, an objective rating system based on players ratings at the start of a game and the game’s outcome.

Tournaments would be the school's grading. What would be the medians, means, and top performers for both sexes? What are the readers' predictions?

I'd love to see any readers predictions in the comments section.

Conclusion

Chess is physical. Biology probably matters.

I predict as time goes on, males will pull away from the females. Maybe something like the table below.

This is really based on intuition. I think the females will be better students at earlier ages. With time, females will care less and less about being really good at chess. Males should get more competitive over time. The most ambitious chess players will be male and they will lift u the average male (mean scores).

Can Religion Be the Blue Pill?

Red pill vs blue pill for anyone unfamiliar with The Matrix.

I don't mean to be offensive to religious people. But there is evidence that religious people are happier, click here for Pew Study.

Actively religious people tend to be happier

As the data points show, it's no guarantee.

But let's assume there was a religion, one that could guarantee bliss in exchange for ignorance. How many people would at some point in their lives take that blue pill?

The Oldman's Health

This shouldn't surprise anyone who was close to the Oldman, but the Oldman was abusing his body and not living healthy. Here are a few responses he wrote:

Wednesday, February 7, 2017: Almost a year has went by and I still feel the same way, [I] do not give a fuck about anything.

Thursday, February 16, 2017: How do I feel mentally and emotionally?? [I] can’’t answer that question unless I lie, I take the 5th amendment on that question it might incriminate me.

Thursday, July 18th, 2017: I said in Feb 16, 2017 that i don’t give a fuck about anything, i still feel the same...

September 7, 2019: My health and body are all fucked up. Though I tell everyone who ask that I am fine. I do not care about anything, I still drink and smoke.

This ties back to an idea I shared in Death, But Mostly Life regarding the Oldman's purpose in life. Of all the issues the Oldman faced his last 6-7 years, his will to live and finding meaning in life may have been the greatest and saddest. Here was his updated list of lingering health problems from 30 March 2016:

  • Right Foot, still not healed, still wearing boot, probably never will heal
  • I still have a hole in my colon
  • COPD.
  • Weak back
  • Swollen prostate
  • Urine problem
  • Blood pressure pills
  • Anti depressing pills
  • Big time bowel movement problems
  • Teeth falling out
  • No dick
  • Uncontrollable bad smell escaping from butt
  • Can’'t hear or see
  • Pain in stomach, like I have heartburn or I am going to throw up

The Meaning of Life (Rough Rough Draft)

I take my duties as a parent and husband seriously. I could do better in both departments, especially as a husband. But these roles do not fulfill my sense of meaning. They're not enough. Maybe nothing will be enough. But I find myself struggling to find motivation and meaning between daycare drop off and pick up. There are things I want to do and most days I'm mostly productive. But I don't have the meaning and fulfillment I'd prefer. This may or may not, directly or indirectly, contribute to my sub par mental health.

I find myself envying selfishness. I know that's not good. I know selfishness isn't the answer, but when I think about my life, I don't feel the agency I'd prefer. My day to day life is monotonous. I'm constantly struggling to get a 3 year old to do something. The dog drives me crazy.

I've been thinking a lot about an email my dad sent me on 17 July 2011.

"The meaning of Life as I see it is being healthy, physically and mentally. Because if you ain't, you serve no purpose at all; then you are a burden, not an asset. When I was younger I was selfish. Everything I wanted was for me. Fame, fortune, and relationships, it was all about me. Now I look back at my life and see what a waste it was. Being selfish has no rewards. Now I realize I have too much. I probably have 2 or 3 of everything. The meaning of life in one word: "survival." I would like to think that someday I could escape all the ugliness and greed in the world. But now I just want to pass on to the people I love to stay healthy in mind and body; do not lie, steal, cheat. or cause pain to any creature. Peace and love are good words. Treat people how you want them to treat you. Do not worry about temptation, just resist it, like all negative thoughts, just resist them. Right now I kind of think the meaning of life is mowing lawns. I try to mow at least 1 acre a day when possible. It keeps me fit mentally and physically. Plus I eat healthy good food. Anyway at 65 years old, I am content to be healthy and have guitars, beer and cigarettes. I personally think I am the happiest person in the world and I have nothing.

The OldMan"

In July 2011 I was anxious and thinking a lot about the meaning of life. I didn't want regrets. I decided Fulfillment, Gratitude, Love, Righteousness, and Truth were the meaning of life (I know right). Those answers are so phony. Fulfillment isn't a meaning. It just poses the question what is fulfilling? Gratitude and love are good ideas. Righteousness and truth are nonsense, just more words to unpack to actually arrive at a meaning. Defining the meaning of life in single words is a silly task best left for insomniatic idealists.

Love and gratitude for what? The only logical answer to maximize happiness is everything. But then what stops you from being a deadbeat father ferryman like Siddhartha. Siddhartha learns to love everything, including inanimate objects like rocks, but he what does he have in the end?

Any state could bring happiness and fulfillment with the right mindset. But as I believe with CBT, changing one's mindset is very difficult. In CBT, it starts with action.

I've wanted to be like Siddhartha since I read the book. And I've kept reading it every year since, and I always find myself wanting to be more like Siddhartha. I could be like Siddhartha with mindfulness and continuous practice of the right mindset. Still, I'm not sure that would satisfy me although I know it could if I wanted it. The real dilemma, is that I want more.

Anyone can give good advice, but following good advice is the hard part. And making decisions between options that have compounding drastically different outcomes as time passes into unknown futures.

I need to start doing something more meaningful with my time. I need to pick something and stick with it for a predetermined amount of time.

I fear I'm going to be like my dad in the since that regrets may haunt me. The past is taking more and more of my conscious mind the older I get. Now, I don't see myself not having regrets from my current life and choices.

I need some lawns to mow. I need something I can focus on that gives me a goal I can accomplish and work on daily.

I'm becoming my dad. He had this story about a guy in a room with everything he wanted and an unknown door. The guy, and my dad, were afraid to open the door, afraid to try to live. I wonder how much of me is the guy in the room afraid to open the door vs accepting my place in life.

Wittgenstein vs Hesse

Here is a brief wiki explanation of Ludwig Wittgenstein's philosophy of language:

"He argues the bewitchments of philosophical problems arise from philosophers' misguided attempts to consider the meaning of words independently of their context, usage, and grammar, what he called "language gone on holiday."

According to Wittgenstein, philosophical problems arise when language is forced from its proper home into a metaphysical environment, where all the familiar and necessary landmarks and contextual clues are removed." (wiki)

Here is an except from Siddhartha:

"Quoth Siddhartha: "I've had thoughts, yes, and insight, again and again. Sometimes, for an hour or for an entire day, I have felt knowledge in me, as one would feel life in one's heart. There have been many thoughts, but it would be hard for me to convey them to you. Look, my dear Govinda, this is one of my thoughts, which I have found: wisdom cannot be passed on. Wisdom which a wise man tries to pass on to someone always sounds like foolishness."

"Are you kidding?" asked Govinda.

"I'm not kidding. I'm telling you what I've found. Knowledge can be conveyed, but not wisdom. It can be found, it can be lived, it is possible to be carried by it, miracles can be performed with it, but it cannot be expressed in words and taught. This was what I, even as a young man, sometimes suspected, what has driven me away from the teachers. I have found a thought, Govinda, which you'll again regard as a joke or foolishness, but which is my best thought. It says: The opposite of every truth is just as true! That's like this: any truth can only be expressed and put into words when it is one-sided. Everything is one-sided which can be thought with thoughts and said with words, it's all one-sided, all just one half, all lacks completeness, roundness, oneness."

I wonder if Hesse influenced Wittgenstein or vice versa.

My Thirst

Why do I want to learn more knowledge and information? I'm constantly consuming media. The media is largely in academic topics. Siddhartha's ending has me questioning my pursuit of information, knowledge, scientific understanding, and wisdom. Why? Is it much better than entertainment? Is it any better than reading genre fiction or watching movies or tv shows?

Knowledge is all good and grand, but wisdom is the applicable or practical knowledge. Am I getting any wiser from trying to soak up large amounts of knowledge? I know the storage capacity of our brains is practically limitless by our standards, but I feel a trade off between learning new material and knowing something well.

Should I slow down and consume less at a slower rate? Should I choose a topic and dive really deep.

Keep Looking and You'll Find It
